The following can make a difference in you being hired or not hired.
- Appropriate attire is required at every meeting with an employer. Never for any reason should casual slacks, jeans or denim skirts be worn to an interview.
- Be prompt 10 - 15 minutes early no more no less. Shake hands and look him/her in the eye.
- Do not for any reason take another person into the interview with you. The employer wants to evaluate you - not a husband, brother, sister, parent or anyone else.
- Be composed and well-mannered. Do not become impatient if you have to wait.
- Do not smoke, even if a cigarette is offered. Do not chew gum or candy. Do not bring a cell phone into the interview.
- If asked to complete an application, do so neatly and thoroughly, regardless of how many applications you have filled out previously, this is the only one you have completed for this employer.
- Never talk against any of your former employers. State reasons for leaving calmly, briefly and truthfully.
- Do not talk too much by boasting, but if you are confident you can handle the job, do not hesitate to say so.
- Be enthusiastic- sell the employer on your ability. Remember, the job he is talking about is important to him and he wants someone who is genuinely interested in his company and his job opening, not someone just shopping around.
- No beards, no goatees, no pagers, no cell phones.
- Let the employer bring up the salary, fringe benefits and vacation. Initially an employer has little interest in your needs. His primary interest is determing what you can do and how much you will be worth to him.
- Determine whether the employer is to call you or if you are to call him. If you are not certain, ask "May I call you (state when) for your decision?"
- Whether or not the interview has been successful, always thank the employer for his time and courtesy.
- If you want the job, do not hesitate to say that you are highly interested in the position. "I want this job." In doing this, you will compliment him, his company, and you may have just made his decision that much easier.
- Always go out and get the job and then you have the luxury of turning it down. Never turn down a job prior to an offer, it may be the best you will get.
